Brief History Of BDO
A F (Fred) Stoy founded the firm in 1903 as ‘Stoy & Co’ and was joined in 1919 by R J (Jack) Hayward. The firm became known as ‘Stoy Hayward’ in 1988 and in July 1992 it merged with another medium-sized firm of chartered accountants, Finnie & Co. In 1994, the firm extended its national network through a union with 13 BDO Binder Hamlyn offices, changed its name to ‘BDO Stoy Hayward’ and applied successfully to become the UK member firm of BDO International. In 1999, we merged with twelve Moores Rowland offices.
In 2002, we became a single national partnership with an associated office in Belfast. As one firm, we converted to LLP status in January 2004, giving greater protection for the business and greater transparency to clients. The firm acquired John Gordon Walton in Leeds (October 2004) and the Bristol, Manchester and Southampton offices of Numerica (June 2005).
BDO has recently merged with PKF (UK) LLP in Spring 2013. The firm, under the BDO brand, has become a leading accountancy and business advisory firm, with some 3,500 people in 24 offices in the UK generating revenues approaching £400 million. The merger creates a financially strong business with significant sector and geographical coverage across the UK and a leading position in the mid-market.
The BDO International network has continued to grow and transform in response to client needs, culminating in the change of our name in October 2009 to simply ‘BDO’. Our move to a single global trading name demonstrates our commitment to service our clients and to compete successfully in our market on a multinational basis.
We have no parent company, being an LLP, and no changes are envisaged to our structure or ownership in the foreseeable future. We are not currently in discussions in respect to any take-over bids, buy-outs or closures.
