Corporate Tax - Gatwick office
Hi, my name is Marina Shevtsova, I am a second year trainee in the corporate tax department, here at BDO Stoy Hayward. I am based now in the Gatwick office. Today I will show you around. There are many aspects to work in the corporate tax department, including preparing tax returns, discussing various technical issues with HMRC, and tax planning work.
It is now 10am and we are about to go into a one line WIP meeting. Working in Gatwick will give me an opportunity to get involved in a variety of different projects. I decided that for me personally it would be good to get a general overview of what the work entails. Here we are not expected to specialise from the first day of our training contract.
These are our meeting rooms. This is the corporate tax department where I work, I love working here, it is a very friendly atmosphere around the office. There is a huge emphasis on the work-life balance. BDO Stoy Hayward is very understanding, especially when it comes to the exams, the work is redistributed away from you to relieve that pressure and assist you with exams. I will be taking my ATT exams in three weeks time, and then I will be taking my CTA next November.
You will be exposed to a lot of client contact from quite early on; for example a lot of compliance work will be carried out at the client’s premises. You do need to have quite good social skills. At the moment we have a number of ongoing enquiries into one of our large property groups. These are centred on various very technical issues, and involve a lot of research, a lot of legislative analysis.
I studied European law with German so I would not say that it is necessary to study maths or accountancy here. We have people working in my department who have done geography, civil engineering, and languages. They are people from extremely diverse backgrounds, and I think that each one of them is bringing their individual skills to the department, which is what makes our team great.
