Heavenly Herts

A healthy turnout of 20 riders joined our first Hertfordshire ride out of Essendon Country Club .  The route skirted historic Hatfield House before heading north along lovely country lanes towards Woolmer Green.

As usual, we had both a sport and social group but the objective of the day was relaxed and convivial riding with plenty of opportunities to chat. The murmur coming from both groups as we threaded our way through the beautiful countryside suggested this was achieved.

On previous rides in the area the road surface has been a topic for discussion, but Hertfordshire has done well and on occasions the road surface was superb. Surprisingly, the social group arrived ahead of the sports group at Ardeley Farm Shop for a refreshment break.

The second leg of the ride gave riders the opportunity to put the foot down and head back to the country club. Once there, we enjoyed a short talk from Stephen Holt whose 10 years in the cycle industry, including as commercial director of Cyclescheme, has given him unique insights into the players to watch and lessons learned.

BDOVELO regular and former rugby international Peter Winterbottom also shared his thoughts on England’s recent tour to South Africa, and his upcoming involvement with Doddie’5 ride on the 12th of August in the Scottish Borders.

A big thank you to Stephen,Peter and all those riders who joined us. Special thanks to Johnny, the general manager at Essendon Country Club, who made us extremely welcome.
