Introduction to the Social Housing Barometer

To provide a snapshot of business and economic confidence across housing associations in England, we have published the first edition of BDO’s Social Housing Barometer. The report includes commentary and opinion from BDO’s specialist social housing team, as well as technical input based on survey outcomes and hot topics. We also share perspectives from industry guest writers and the key challenges they expect to face in the coming year.

Our aim is for the report to become a bi-annual publication to continue the discussion about how in a time of rapid change, social housing associations can plan for the future, balancing opportunities with risks to meet the UK’s housing demand.

If you would like further information about the barometer and how you can get involved, please contact Phil Cliftlands.

Our first edition

Our first edition sheds light on the current issues and trends within the social housing sector. The report explores topics including current sentiment, risks and strategic priorities in the market and shines the spotlight on the appetite for joint ventures with the private sector.

In May 2017, we surveyed housing associations across the UK, covering the full size spectrum and mainly those undertaking multiple activities. Despite the challenging external environment including the outstanding Brexit negotiations, our findings are encouraging and respondents appear confident about their ability to continue to provide housing to meet the UK’s increasing demand.

Interestingly, 71% of housing associations surveyed say board and management confidence in the UK economy hasn’t changed over the last six months.

We do hope you find this edition an interesting read and as always, we would love to hear your views on the topics so do get in touch with Phil Cliftlands.
