Weekly virtual rides
Well we’re certainly facing unprecedented times, with the sporting calendar having been decimated by COVID-19 and outdoor activity still restricted. But not to be beaten, we have successfully gone virtual! Our weekly rides have seen some serious action, with some relishing the ability to put the power down, while others are happy to continue the chat and rely on the “no drop” facility. With most rides scheduled on a Friday, why not join us as a way to roll into the weekend.
It’s now been 8 weeks since BDOVELO stalwart Nick Poulter set up the first Zwift-based virtual ride, which saw Nick and I riding the Surrey Hills from the “comfort” of our respective garages. The Discord app provided an opportunity for a few words of “encouragement” from Nick, particularly when we hit the hills. Since then we have been running at least one ride a week, across the varied worlds of Zwift – sometimes hilly, sometimes flat… always just a little bit competitive! Fortunately, for some of us, we’re using the “no drop” facility on Zwift so no matter how hard some are trying to breakaway off the front, the group stays together.
As the lockdown starts to be relaxed, I’m sure most of us would rather be out in the fresh air, but with restrictions limiting the size of the peloton, the Zwift “meetup” format allows us to stay connected; to ride and chat together at a time when the need for physical distancing doesn’t need to mean social isolation.
We will continue to run BDOVELO virtual rides until we can get back on the road, so why not join us? If you have a Zwift account and want to get involved in our virtual rides, please contact Gemma Salmon on [email protected].
