BDO partners with social mobility charity to offer new skills programme

The new four-week long programme includes employability workshops, coaching for job applications and support with interview techniques. The course also includes insight into a career in professional services, as well as a sports leadership qualification delivered in partnership with Liverpool FC Foundation.

Once candidates have completed the programme there will also be opportunities to apply for several permanent Liverpool-based positions within the firm.

LTSB was set-up as a charity in 2012 to help prepare and support bright young people from disadvantaged backgrounds throughout the country. This involves helping them to build their professional skills and find suitable employment opportunities within firms like BDO and other large employers.

Nigel Britton, partner and head of BDO’s Liverpool offices commented: “BDO has worked with LTSB for a number of years. We now employ more than ten people in permanent positions across our Liverpool offices as a direct result of our work with this fantastic charity.

“At BDO we believe in equal opportunities for all, no matter what a person’s background. As a large employer, we are proud to be able to play a role in supporting more social mobility both here in Liverpool and across the UK. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted the education and employment of young people, this investment in youth talent and the work of LTSB is more important now than ever before.”

Joe Eaves is an associate in BDO’s Liverpool office who joined the firm through LTSB two years ago.

He commented on his experience:

“I joined BDO in March 2019, working from the firm’s Liverpool office after completing the business course offered by LTSB once I left school.

“I would strongly recommend this type of course for anyone wanting to learn more about the world of business and work, or who wants to increase their confidence and explore different career paths in industries they may not know much about.

“The team at LTSB encouraged me to apply for a role at BDO as they thought it would be a good fit for me and my skills. I was invited to an interview and offered the job as an Assistant shortly afterwards and have since been promoted twice in two years.

“From day one I’ve been given a lot of responsibility at BDO and it is brilliant to be able to play a part in a firm of that employs 6,500 people. A personal highlight for me was being recently nominated for the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Young person of the year award’ which made me really proud.”
