Surrey and Sussex are home to hundreds of companies with a turnover between £10m-£300m. Collectively these companies employ more than 139,000 people and generate overall revenues of £27.9bn.

During 2017 we interviewed founders and business leaders of the top performing companies who continued to grow sales and profits in spite of the rising inflation, volatile exchange rates and prevailing uncertainty over Brexit that dominated the headlines for most of last year.

The Top Twenty in our Best of Business league tables collectively grew sales by an impressive average of 34.5% and profit by 40% last year, marking them out to be truly extraordinary. Between them they generate in excess of £3bn revenues and employ more than 17,000 people.

Companies of tomorrow

Expected to break through the £10m turnover threshold are the top twenty companies of tomorrow with a turnover between £5m - £10m. These businesses outperformed their peer group with average sales at £7m (compared to £5.7m last year), representing sales per employee of £145k. 

The best performing company across both counties was Sussex-based architectural metalwork specialist Chatsworth Forge Group, which reported Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 415% over the three periods. Mast Interiors Limited, the drywall experts based in Surrey, follows with an equally impressive CAGR of 414%.

Profit Growth

Surrey and Sussex’s top performing mid-sized companies continue to forge ahead, reporting profit growth of 40% in the last year, in spite of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

The best performing company across both counties was Surrey-based Michael J Gallagher Contractors Limited with CAGR of 147%, followed closely behind by SAV Holding (UK) Limited, also Surrey-based. Two companies – SAV Holding (UK) Limited and Whiteline (Group) Ltd – have maintained their performance by appearing in the list for the second year running.

Sales Growth

In sharp contrast to businesses across the country where only 4% are feeling more confident in the 100 days since the election, Surrey and Sussex’s best performing mid-market companies are growing.

The top twenty companies in each county reported an impressive combined sales growth of 43% in Sussex and 32% in Surrey over the last year. In the top spot in Surrey is Giggling Restaurants Limited which saw a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in revenue over three years of 61%; the popular restaurant chain is a newcomer to the top twenty league table. Occupying the number one position in Sussex for the second year running is Envision Pharma with a CAGR of 52% in revenues.

Top Twenty 2016

Throughout 2016 we identified the top twenty performing companies in the key areas of international sales growth, profit growth and overall sales growth in Surrey and Sussex. Each business was nominated for the prestigious Company of the Year award for both Surrey and Sussex and invited to an awards ceremony and gala dinner. The overall winners for each county were chosen by an independent judging panel.

Established in 1997, Michelmersh has grown through acquisition and organic growth into a profitable and asset rich business, producing approximately 72 million clay bricks, tiles and pavers per annum.

International growth

In the year to February 2017, international sales grew by 14% in Surrey and a staggering 40% across Sussex, resulting in an overall total of £2.9 billion.

With important transport links, such as Gatwick and Heathrow airports and Shoreham port located within, or striking distance of, Surrey and Sussex, it was not surprising to see strong performance in international growth.

Companies which performed particularly well with a compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of 129% are Redhill-based Nutfield Holdings, a distributor of canned foods and ambient seafood, fruit and vegetables, and Hove-based Custom Healthcare, a contract manufacturer and packager with a CAGR of 93%.

Profit growth

Working for one of the top firms pays dividends. Best in Business research identifies that each employee is on average £1,000 a year better off than employees at other mid-market companies, with average remuneration being £43,400; an increase of 5.7% on last year. A clear demonstration that successful company performance is flowing through to those that contribute towards its growing profitability.

The best performing firm across both counties was Sussex-based Arun Estate Agencies Limited with CAGR of 159%, followed closely by Surrey-based Fileturn Holdings Limited. Three companies – Whelan & Grant (Holdings), Deutsche Leasing (UK) Limited and Broadway Malyan Holdings Limited – have maintained their performance by appearing in the top twenty league table for the second year running.

Sales growth

Despite tightening market conditions and the uncertainty leading up to the EU referendum, Surrey and Sussex’s fastest growing mid-market companies continued to forge ahead in their expansion plans, reporting combined sales growth of 27% in the last year to £1.9bn. Average sales per company stand at £48m (compared to £38m last year), representing sales per employee of £155k. 

The best performing company across both counties with CAGR of 170% was Surrey-based Scitech Trustees Limited, which provides engineering, construction and professional services to life sciences. Another Surrey-based success story is Teamsport Holdings Limited, the indoor go-karting experts with 90% growth over the last year.
