Chris Johnson

I am an Audit Partner (ACA MPhys) within the Professional Services team at BDO. I have worked for the firm since February 2015.

I love working with professional services businesses, given my passion for people development and knowledge. Over my ten years’ of extensive experience in the sector I have built in-depth expertise in a number of its subsectors, notably legal services, consultancy and accountancy. I have a thorough understanding and interest in the opportunities and the issues that professional services businesses face in the modern world and use best practice to plan and deliver an effective, tailored and value-added audit. My clients are a mixture of entrepreneurial businesses and Private Equity backed businesses, together with large (listed and unlisted), complex audits including significant international reporting requirements. I also have significant experience in the requirements of AR 1 reviews for the Solicitors' Regulatory Authority, for which I have previously led the firm's national training.

I enjoy using the insights and knowledge gained from my deep understanding of my audits to make recommendations to Management that will support improvement and development of their business going forward. In 2020 I played an instrumental role in the take on, and audit, of a year 1 Accounting consolidator business, including the audit of their formation accounting, complex impairment reviews and Group Financial Statements prepared under International Financial Reporting Standards for the first time. In the six years following that audit, I have continued to play a key role in the audit of this Group, navigating a number of increasingly complex financial reporting issues, optimising our audit strategy and making key recommendations to continue to improve controls efficiency and governance matters as they have progressed through their growth and consolidation journey.

People are the core to our business, and as with any professional service provider, an audit is only as good as its team - I thrive off coaching our people on the ground, developing their understanding and encourage constructive challenge of our approach to continue to drive efficiency and effectiveness of our audit. Through this investment in our future leaders, I am building a group of sector-specialist business professionals to deliver exceptional audits.

When I am not working you’ll find me cycling, running, kayaking or walking our Boxer dog with my wife and three boys. I also like to take time where possible to practice martial arts which for me are essential reflection time and encourage self-discipline, before recharging with something new and tasty I've whipped up in the Kitchen.
