Murray gained a Bachelor of Commerce at Auckland University and qualified as an accountant in New Zealand, before moving to Western Australia in 1980. He joined PKF-UK in 1983, becoming a Partner with the firm in 2001. He joined BDO as a Partner following PKF's merger with BDO in 2013.
Murray established and leads BDO UK’s International Projects Group (IPG), a team of consultants based in London which focuses solely on undertaking a wide range of assignments in developing nations, emerging markets and transition economies. The majority of these assignments are funded by the international donor community, principally the World Bank, European Commission, EBRD and the UK's Department for International Development, although IPG has also undertaken assignments for a number of private sector clients.
With over 30 years’ experience in international consultancy, Murray has worked in 45 countries, principally in East and West Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He is responsible for the project direction and quality assurance for all of IPG’s multi-disciplinary multi-annual, multi-million dollar technical assistance projects.
IPG's services cover all aspects of Public Financial Management (eg Institutional development of Ministries of Finance; Diagnostic Studies; Aid Oversight and Accountability), Private Sector Development (eg Micro and SME development; Access to Finance; Privatisation and Restructuring; PPP/PFI) and Public Sector Accounts and Assurance (eg Support to Supreme Audit Institutions; Developing and building capacity to implement International Public Sector Accounting Standards).
He is a member of the accounting institutes of New Zealand, Australia, UK and Sierra Leone, and is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Management Consultants. He is a certified PRINCE2 Practitioner.
