An evening reviewing “The Midlife Cyclist” and progress at Le Tour
We were delighted to be joined by Phil Cavell (co-founder of Cyclefit and author of The Midlife Cyclist”) and Harry Tanfield (Qhubeka NextHash) for an evening dissecting Phil’s new book and reflecting on what has to date been an incredible edition of the Tour de France.
The attraction of Phil Cavell’s book, “The Midlife Cyclist”, is that there is something in it for anyone who enjoys riding their bike, whether or not they are looking for the holy grail of training hard, riding fast … and staying healthy. Phil shared with us some expert, and sometimes controversial, views on physiology, FTP and bike fitting but definitely left us wanting more! We’re in no doubt that the book will find its way into many a Christmas stocking come December.
Discussion covered differences between men and women and several areas of focus for cyclists “of a certain age”, particularly how one’s training needs to vary and adapt as the body ages. Phil highlighted the importance of ensuring those time-poor amongst us maintain a balance in training and it was interesting to hear from Harry Tanfield, who gave us an insight into his levels of training and how our own schedules and programmes might stack up against those of a pro.
However, the real reason for Harry joining us was to give us a real-time update on life at the Tour and his mates in the Qhubeka NextHash team. It was obvious that the tour has been a real challenge for the team, notwithstanding the crashes, the tough parcours and the unforgiving race calendar. His respect for those riders leading and challenging for podium places was immense, with other riders in the peloton simply looking to finish the ride. He certainly reinforced the extent of the achievement of simply making it to Paris.
As inevitably happens, particularly given the stand-out performances of a small cadre of riders, discussions turned to what might be behind those performances: Harry’s candid answers were not lost on the audience!
<<<<< Stop press>>>> “Police raid Bahrain Victorious hotel at Tour de France” – the team’s hotel was raided the morning after the webinar, perhaps the French police were listening in.
We wish Harry well in his forthcoming races in Belgium and further afield and hope his disrupted season after the crash in the UAE sets him up for a successful 2022.
Finally, back to Phil’s book, which is available via his Cyclefit website if you’d like a signed copy or the usual channels including independent bookshops, Amazon and Waterstones. Enjoy the read…..
