Your trusted auditor ensuring financial controls, good governance and risk management
BDO is a major supplier of external audit services to the public sector. We work with healthcare organisations such as NHS Trusts, Foundation Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and with local authorities and central government bodies. Our large portfolio of public sector clients means our audit teams busy providing assurance over reported financial results and positions, and over the arrangements in place to secure value for money.
Our Partners have extensive public sector experience. Our clients require a high quality and thorough audit to provide robust assurance to stakeholders, including the public sector bodies, regulators and members of the public. We work with officers and the Audit Committee to understand the particular risk environment and challenges facing our clients, and maintain close contact throughout the year so that we can anticipate and promptly react to any areas of changed risk priority. Although we prioritise the ‘professional scepticism’ that our professional standards require, we work with our clients where possible to reduce the audit burden and focus on providing transparent findings and practical recommendations in our reports.
In addition to our external audit services, we provide a number of related services, including:
- Grant funding certification and assurance – we can undertake assurance reviews and provide agreed reports and opinions tailored to different grant schemes, including national UK government funding to UK public sector bodies, EU grants and international development schemes; and
- Technical advice and support on accounting issues – Non-audit clients value our assistance with accounts preparation, our advice on technical accounting issues (e.g. consolidation of entities and valuation issues), secondments and interim support where necessary.
We are one of only five audit firms on the Public Sector Audit Appointments (PSAA) audit framework, which covers appointing auditors for local government, police and local NHS bodies, for setting audit fees and for making arrangements for the certification of housing benefit subsidy claims.
We are familiar with public sector procurement methods and have won places on a significant number of local, regional and national frameworks after competitive tendering. We understand that our clients expect us to adhere to the appropriate protocols, rules and guidelines when bidding for audit appointments and we are proud to note that after all of these criteria have been met, clients who choose to work with us like the quality of our people, our professional approach and the value we can add to their organisations.
