Am I Bovvered? Wannacry

15 May 2017

Following the computer virus that encrypted NHS computers last week, we have set out what we understand happened, whether it is likely to affect your systems and if it has, what to do about it.

So what is it?

The virus that attacked the NHS wasn’t targeted at them specifically but at computers with particular vulnerabilities.

This particular virus uses a vehicle “Eternal Blue”, an exploit (paradoxically) developed by the U.S. National Security Agency. It was released by a hacker group in April 2017. The virus itself is known by various names including “WannaCry”, “WannaCrypt”, “WanaCrypt0r 2.0” and “Wanna Decryptor”.
