Restaurants and Bars Winter 2018/19
12 February 2019
Trend setter or quiet regretter?
2018 was a year of highs and lows and there certainly wasn’t a dull moment in the Restaurants and Bars sector. Challenging trading conditions and uncertainty around Brexit continued to challenge discretionary spend, impacting the high street and fuelling the resurgence of CVAs and even administrations. However, there was some good news for pub owners who saw their like-for-like sales grow in comparison to their casual dining counterparts due to warm weather and England’s performance in the World Cup.
In this edition of BDO’s Restaurants and Bars report, we access how GDP growth, consumer confidence and access to employees has been negatively impacted by political uncertainty in the UK. We also feature an article from David Shipton, MD of Pubs at NewRiver, who shares an insight into why he thinks wet-led concepts are still leading the way in the Restaurants and Bars sector. As ever, we end the report with our top ten predictions for the Restaurants and Bars sector for the year ahead.
If you would like to discuss the report further or any wider sector issues, please contact Mark Edwards, Head of Restaurants and Bars or speak to your usual BDO adviser.
