Executive summary

I am an Partner within the Financial Services audit team and specialise in the Insurance sector. My work embraces audited entities across the sector including PE backed and owner managed intermediaries as well as mutually and privately owned risk carriers, commercial and captive, active and in run-off. Insurance is a fascinating sector which facilitates commercial activity throughout the UK and international economies through underwriting risk.

I, and the insurance team, have to have detailed understanding and knowledge of the various commercial relationships and interactions in order to audit effectively and to the highest quality. Understanding the structure and operation of insurance and reinsurance programmes is always hugely interesting, as many claims can be, particularly those typically seen within the Lloyd’s market. This knowledge and experience is valuable and essential to properly understand each entities operations and risks and to deliver appropriate audit quality.

My first task on my first audit resulted in identifying a fraud and instilled doggedness, inquisitiveness and determination to get answers rather than responses. Since that first week, my enjoyment of audit, of understanding how entities and sectors work and whether transactions make sense has continued to grow and it is a pleasure to be able to pass on knowledge and enthusiasm to trainees and managers and see their careers develop and flourish.

Outside of work, my passions include hiking, the Lake District, growing and eating my own vegetables and also cycling. I am a proud (but still tired at the thought of it) member of the Club des Cingles (commonly known as the ‘Fellowship of Nutters’). This challenges me in different ways and helps keep me active and fresh, physically and mentally – both of which help me to start each week with renewed vigour.
