The Derbyshire Growth Barometer 2017
21 June 2017
From High Peak to the Derwent Valley, few regions of the UK can match Derbyshire for geographic diversity. It’s a diversity that is reflected in the county’s economy, too, which ranges from agriculture to high-tech engineering under global brands such as Rolls-Royce and Toyota.
So perhaps it is no wonder that the county’s top 50 fastest-growing mid-sized companies are a diverse bunch as well. No less than nine sectors are represented in the list, from financial services provider Mortgage Advice Bureau in first place to T.D.P Textiles at number 50. This diversity seems good for business. The county which led the Industrial Revolution continues to deliver hearty returns for entrepreneurs, with the top 50’s mid-sized businesses joint turnover growing 69% over the last three years. This Growth Barometer looks at what makes the county special… and how it can stay so.
As we look forward and ask ourselves the question how do we build a sustainable ‘new economy’ in the post-Brexit word one thing stands out, that mid-sized, high growth entrepreneurial businesses are an essential and dynamic element of the county. Yet these businesses are frequently overlooked and undervalued. The sheer scale of the largest businesses mean they grab attention due to their size and investment capability while the very smallest are often seen as the most deserving and dynamic sector.
But despite the variety of shapes and sizes, these mid-sized businesses share some common characteristics. They are entrepreneurial and ambitious, they are high growth and fast developing and they are innovative and break the traditional mould. This is something we know all about in Derbyshire leading innovation throughout history.
