Disruptor or Disrupted?

Our survey of UK technology companies suggests that 2018 will be a great year for the sector. The vast majority (82%) are very or somewhat confident about the general outlook for 2018, and confidence is even higher when it comes to achieving significant revenue growth.

A huge 86% of tech companies expect 2018 to be a better year than 2017 for their business. One respondent expresses this particularly well and expects their business to “grow irrespective of [the] economy”.

Tech companies’ positivity is based on the impact of recent investment decisions (e.g. in technology and talent), the development of new products or services, the impact of recent or expected M&A and greater market awareness or readiness for their offering.

We take a closer look at the strategic growth plans businesses will be implementing and challenges causing concern. We also highlight the tech that’s set to disrupt, the sectors in line for disruption and share our thoughts to what 2018 may hold.

Who we surveyed?

We conducted an online survey of technology companies in February 2018. Our respondents run businesses in a wide range of tech sectors, including software, digital media, ecommerce / platforms, FinTech, managed services, telecoms, AI, hardware and consultancy and gaming.

Our respondent companies cover the size spectrum, with the smallest generating annual revenues below £2m and the largest reporting revenues above £100m. We had a particularly strong response from businesses headquartered in London and the South East, but also attracted participants from across the rest of the UK, as well as some international tech companies.
